he principle of design in art that is a repetition of the same shapes or elements. Patterns make art more exciting and interesting by decorating the surfaces of drawings, paintings, sculptures, and architecture.

Pattern is closely related to rhythm and repetition. Many art resources may separate these as three different principles of design.

Patterns can be arranged or clustered throughout a composition to give the artwork visual movement, balance, and unity.

Patterns surround us in nature with examples such as leaf or flower patterns, shingles on a roof, and lines of fence posts. If certain fruits and vegetables are cut in half, they form a radial pattern (a pattern that forms from a common center).

These are natural repetitions that appear to be unplanned or unorganized.

re easily recognized because they are planned and the repetitions are consistent. Regular patterns often occur in glazes on pottery and in the decorations of woven rugs or fabrics.
