In November of 1966, many people speculated that Paul McCartney had died in a car crash and was replaced with an imposter. The rest of the Beatles wanted to cover his death up and replaced him with look-a-like named Billy Shears. According to the theory, the bandmates began to feel guilty and proceeded to leave clues in the album. The rumor had died down but resurfaced again in 1996. Articles were getting published claiming there were clues in songs about McCartney’s death. Somebody had called and told a radio host to play the Beatles song “Revolution 9” backwards from the White Album. The radio host did and revealed that it says “turn me on, dead man.”

This blew the whole rumor up again. People also said that a part of the song sounds like a car crash and someone saying �

In the background is a car with the license plate reading “LMW 28IF” and some fans have said that Paul would be 28 if he was alive. A big clue that made people believe that Paul was dead was the cover of their album Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. The band points to a freshly dug up hole and the bandmates all dressed in black. Many thought that this album cover was representing a funeral too. On another album, fans believed McCartney was in a black walrus costume which symbolizes death in some countries. Paul McCartney did many interviews and denied rumors along with his bandmates. Lennon said that it was the dumbest thing he had ever heard.
