born in the Wallowa Valley in Oregon-he was a leader of the Nez Perce tribe. The US government was trying to relocate them to Idaho and they had signed a treaty in 1863, but Chief Joseph felt that the treaty was illegal and refused to recognize it. He led his people on a long march through Idaho and Montana and won some battles. He finally surrendered in Bear Paw Mountains of Montana. His speech is a symbol of the Nez Perce and their tragic plight.
