honors and awards EW synopsis: A light skinned African American woman named Pinky, goes to nursing school by pretending to be white. While there she falls in love with a doctor who knows nothing of her heritage. When she returns home for a visit, her grandmother (Ethel Waters) convinces her to stay longer. In her stay, Pinky takes care of an elderly white woman named Mrs. Em. Pinky and Mrs. Em develop a friendship and she leaves Pinky her land. Tragically Mrs. Em dies. Her family brings the matter of Pinky getting the land to court, and she has to work extra to pay for the court fees. The court rules in Pinky's favor. The doctor she had fallen in love with returns and wants her to become his wife.
