Insomnia is a common problem that affects millions of people worldwide. It is defined as difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep despite having the opportunity to do so. The consequences of insomnia can be wide-ranging and include daytime fatigue, poor concentration and decision making, mood disturbances, increased risk of accidents and errors at work, reduced job performance, relationship problems, decreased quality of life and even health problems such as obesity and heart disease.The exact cause of insomnia can vary from person to person but it is often linked to stress or anxiety. Insomnia is also associated with certain physical conditions such as chronic pain or allergies; medications; alcohol use; caffeine consumption; irregular sleep patterns; aging; shift work or jet lag. Often times multiple factors may be contributing to an individual’s insomnia. There are several treatments available for those suffering from insomnia including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) which focuses on changing thought patterns in order to improve sleeping habits; relaxation techniques such as breathing exercises or progressive muscle relaxation ; prescription medications such as benzodiazepines or non-benzodiazepines which affect how neurotransmitters interact in the brain causing sedation ; lifestyle changes like avoiding stimulants close to bedtime ; improving sleep hygiene which involves creating a comfortable environment for sleeping by setting regular bedtimes/wake times , keeping electronics out of the bedroom , exercising regularly but not too close to bed time etc . It is important that if you think you may have symptoms of insomnia that you speak with your doctor about it so they can make recommendations based on your individual situation . With proper treatment most people are able to find relief from their insomnia symptoms and return back to healthy sleep patterns .
