Florence Nightingale (1820-1910) was an English nurse, social reformer, and statistician who is widely considered to be the founder of modern nursing. Born into a wealthy British family in Florence, Italy in 1820, she was raised primarily by her parents and received a good education for the time period. After developing an early interest in nursing during her teenage years, she began training as a nurse at St Bartholomew’s Hospital in London. She soon found herself working on battlefields during the Crimean War and leading an army of volunteer nurses to improve conditions for wounded soldiers. Nightingale revolutionized healthcare through her innovative approaches to sanitation and hygiene which greatly reduced mortality rates among patients and personnel alike. Her work also led to financial reforms within hospitals and other institutions designed to better serve those seeking medical care. Known as The Lady with the Lamp because of her habit of making nightly rounds at military hospitals, Nightingale wrote extensively about her experiences and theories on health reform throughout Europe and North America. Nightingale’s most influential works include Notes on Nursing (1859), Suggestions for Thought (186156), Cassandra (1852), Notes on Hospitals (1863)and The Influence of Environment On Health: A Lecture To The Working Classes (1872). In addition to authoring several books, she also lobbied for legislation that would improve public health standards in England and abroad; these included sanitary laws such as the Public Health Act of 1875 which improved water quality across Britain. As recognition for her service during World War I, Nightingale became one of only two women ever awarded honorary membership into Britain’s Order Of Merit; this honor was bestowed upon her by Queen Victoria personally in 1907. Throughout history Florence Nightingale remains one of the most admired characters due to both her compassion towards sick people along with courageous acts while treating them during times when medicine were limited or unavailable resources..
