CREDIT HOURS

Courses taken in college are measured in terms of credit hours. To earn one credit hour, a student must attend a class for one classroom hour (usually 50 minutes) per week for the whole semester (usually 16 weeks). The number of credit hours taken each semester can impact your SEED eligibility as well as the amount of other federal financial aid you may receive.

Acronym for Free Application for Federal Student Aid. This almost universal application for financial aid, including loans, grants, college work-study and other federal and state programs. It is also often required before a student can be considered for college scholarships.

FRESH START

Any student who has not attended Delaware Tech for a minimum of three years and upon readmission, completes a minimum of 12 credits in consecutive terms with at least a 2.0 GPA may petition the Dean of Instruction to eliminate the course grades received prior to the readmission term. Fresh Start is granted only one time per student and is irreversible.

PARTS OF TERM

Each semester at Delaware Tech is broken into different parts of the term. The traditional 16 week semester is considered the 1st part of the term. Some courses are scheduled for only 8 weeks. If the course meets the first 8 weeks of the semester it is considered a 2nd part of term class. Courses scheduled during the last 8 weeks of the semester are considered 3rd part of term courses.

PART-TIME STUDENT

A student taking less than 12 credit hours per semester is considered a part-time student. This status impacts the amount of financial aid a student may receive.

POOL

Some Delaware Tech majors require students to complete a variety of course prior to being accepted into that major. Until officially admitted into the major, the student is enrolled in the "pool". These majors include the Nursing, EMT, Surgical Tech, Dental Hygiene Tech, Energy Management and Renewable Energy Solar programs.

PRE-COLLEGE/ PRE-TECH COURSES

WITHDRAW PERIOD

Students may withdraw from classes during a semester but there are established procedures for doing so. If you are struggling with a class and believe that withdrawing is an option, you should speak with the instructor or your academic advisor as soon as possible in order to avoid impacting your GPA negatively. DO NOT JUST STOP GOING TO CLASS.
