question
Essay: Describe the process used by the Dutch to reclaim land from the sea over the centuries. How has the approach to the environment changed in recent years? What possible problem may arise from this change?
answer
The Netherlands has one of the oldest land reclamation efforts in the world. The Dutch began to reclaim marshy lowlands from the North Sea which resulted in new dry land called polders. It was created with protective dikes and drainage ditches. Windmills are also used to make pumping excess water off the land much easier. In 1932, the Dutch created a dike approximated 20 miles across the water to fix the impending problem of Zuider Zee. Despite these efforts, the sea continued its assault and so the Delta Plan was undertaken. This plan included a network of dams that was finally completed in the 1980s. . There is the issue of insecticides used by farmers that are are contributors to contaminated drinking water and acid rain. Some plans have been abandoned due to these concerns and even resulted in the destruction of fields by tearing down dikes. One of the biggest issues is, however, that the sea levels are predicted to increase by 20 inches due to global warming. The " greenhouse gases" environmental strategy is likely to be cut by the Dutch government because it is claimed to be responsible for global warming.
