question
What caused the American Civil War?
answer
The south wanted slavery and the North wanted freedom, subsequently leading to the tensions leading to the war. People with power can really have strong views. John Calhoun was the person who was for slavery and wanted to keep/expand slavery in the US. Henry Clay was the person who was favoring the Northern side and wanted to end slavery.
question
What major events lead to the American Civil War?
answer
Many things caused the American civil war including the slavery laws, the tension between the states, the missouri compromise, Clay & Calhoun, and eventually the election 1860, which was the straw that broke the camel's back because the South scared of the loss of slavery and the feeling of lack of power.
question
Who is to blame for the American Civil War?
answer
The people most responsible in order of importance, are Calhoun, Clay, & Lincoln. Clay was the person who wanted to end slavery, Calhoun is for slavery, and Lincoln was the newly elected president who was slightly against slavery at the time. People had the wrong views on Lincoln.
question
What important people may have been able to stop the American Civil War and how?
answer
All three of the people listed in question 3 could have prevented the civil war by simply coming to an agreement and using the missouri compromise line.Calhoun specifically could have simply kept his mouth shut and stopped trying to expand slavery, Clay could have not been trying to end slavery, and Lincoln could have said he wasn't for or against slavery.
question
How is westward expansion connected to the Civil War?
answer
Westward expansion lead to the creation of more states which lead to more political views & perspectives. These new views were spread and created tensions between the states. These tensions lead to the secession of the South. Also the land itself was hard to divide up equally into states, and that created more tensions.
question
How is federalism connected to the Civil War?
answer
Federalism first of all is the federal principle or system of government. So government is related to slavery because there was people in the government who were pro-slavery and there were people who were anti-slavery. Also, some people did not like how the government was operating in general.
question
How is slavery connected to the Civil War?
answer
Slavery played a huge role in the American civil war. The south wanted slavery to expand to the west, but the north wanted slavery to be abolished. This would have caused arguments to start between these two sections of the United states. The appearance of Abraham Lincoln also increased the effect, because he threatened to get rid of slavery. This caused the south to secede from the nation, and a war was started.
question
If someone asked you to simply explain the cause of the American Civil War how would you answer? Use the data below to construct your "simple" response.
answer
I would answer that is was mostly sectionalism and division between the states. Another thing that would have sparked the American Civil war would have been slavey. The south wanted slavery to be a thing in the south, and they wanted slavery to expand to the west, even though only 4.8 southerners actually owned slaves, while 95.2 percent didn't. The north hated slavery, and wanted to get rid of it, yet only 2 percent of northerners were abolitionists.
question
What would you say to someone who said slavery caused the civil war?
answer
I would disagree, A very small percent of people in the south owned slaves and a very small percent in the north was abolitionists. This just proves that the north and the south have had bad blood from more than just slavery. Some of the them are political reasons such as taxes and tariffs. The war between the South and the North had almost no abolitionists. Also there were almost no slave owners in the south.
question
Why should Americans learn about the cause of the American Civil War?
answer
America should learn about the american civil war because we don't want to repeat history, therefore people should learn about it so that we don't have issues between the south and the north again. The civil war was a big bump in the road for the United States of America, once the issue of slavery was resolved in America everyone went back to their normal everyday life and the civil war was over. But America still suffered from the losses and the terrible battles that occurred during this war. America doesn't want itself to be split into two and start killing each other again, this is why they must teach about the civil war so we realize how bad it was and that we shouldn't do it again.
