A famous line from Lincoln's House Divided Speech, in which he said that the Union could not function as half slave and half free, and that eventually, the Union would become entirely one or the other

Written by Stephen Douglas; he explained that slavery could be abolished in a territory if excluded before the state's constitution was written; this eventually led him to lose the 1860 election

An abolitionist that was willing to do anything, including use violence, to end slavery; was hanged after he led a group of patriots to steal weapons and give them to slaves and people that were also willing to use violence to end slavery

John Brown led a group of abolitionist to attack people near Pottawatomie Creek in Franklin County, Kansas, on May 24-May 25 in 1856; five settlers were killed

A compromise proposed by Senator John J. Crittenden, from Kentucky, in an attempt to solve the problem of Southern states seceding from the Union; stated that slavery would be abolished in the north only, that Congress couldn't pass any laws outlawing slavery in the slave states, and that none of these amendments could be changed in the future; this compromise was unsuccessful

The new government set up by the 11 states that seceded from the US; the Confederacy was defeated by the Union during the Civil War
