(1799-1800) Eli Whitney developed a manufacturing system which uses standardized parts which are all identical and thus, interchangeable. Before this, each part of a given device had been designed only for that one device; if a single piece of the device broke, it was difficult or impossible to replace. With standardized parts, it was easy to get a replacement part from the manufacturer. Whitney first put used standardized parts to make muskets for the US government.

Common in Masshachusetts, enlisted young women, mostly farmers' daughters in their late teens and early twenties. It was one of the two systems of recruitment that emerged to bring this new labor supply to the expanding of textile mills. It had good housing and food in the early years.

In 1834, mill workers in Lowell organized a union known as this, which staged a strike to protest a 25 percent wage cut. Two years later the association struck again, against a rent increase in boardinghouses. Both Strikes failed, and a recession in 1837 nearly killed the organization.

It was in response to laws passed in New Hampshire and Pennsylvania to limit the work day to 10 hours, unless they entered into an express contract. However they were kind of useless as an employer could just force an employee to sign it in order to have that job. This occurred in 1848.

for working-class discontent: politics. Economic opportunity many not have greatly expanded in the nineteenth century, but opportunities to participate in politics did. And to many white, male working people, access to the ballot seemed to offer a way to help guide their society and to feel like a significant part of their communities.

Most women also had much less access to education than men, a situation that survived into the mid-nineteenth century. Although they were encouraged to attend school at the elementary level, they were strongly discouraged -and in most cases effectively barred-from pursuing higher education. College in Ohio became the first college in America to accept female students; it permitted four to enroll in 1837, despite criticism that coeducation was a rash experiment approximating fee love. Other institutions did not share this view.

The view of women that encouraged and increased the value of the role of mothers in a family. Nurturing the young was emphasized. Similarly, women's role as wives increased as well. Plus women became consumers. basically Women = home, and not politics, religion, or controversy

The editor of Godey's Lady's Book after 1837, who had earlier founded a women's magazine of her own. It dealt with fashions, shopping and homemaking advice, domestic concerns. Hale said in 1841 that "other subjects are more important for our sex, and more proper for our sphere.
