the idea that the south would industrialize and compete economically with the north However, the south remained primarily agricultural and movement of the south went backwards

Thought the south was going to out yankee the yankee, but only a few parts of the south industrialized

cotton remains king in the south (cotton, tobacco, and sugar grew best in a southern climate)

1. Less money, education and technology 2. Really isolated on purpose from the rest of the country 3. distrust of new ideas from outsiders 4. aftermath of war and attempt to maintain a rigid social system 5. only 10% of southerners lived in cities

Farmers pool their resources and combine crop to sell together in an attempt to get better prices Started in Texas (like the grange in west) later forms the populist party

losing rights, especially the right to vote

Gov't went from control by republicans to democrats (even though blacks voted 3:1 republican)

The peoples party (3rd party) Interracial political movement, targeted by both democrats and republicans, looking for economics to unify farmers

Georgia populist leader He believes that race segregation creates a bad monetary system but after losing the next 2 elections he moves away from idea of interracial unity, kicks blacks out of populist party, and becomes one of the worst racists in the country (toward all races)

disenfranchise the blacks and poor whites, lots of fraud

making people pay a tax to vote

people stuff a bunch of votes into the box w/o others noticing (fraud)

only eligible to vote if your grandfather was eligible to vote (excluded all black voters)

You had to be literate and satisfy the registrar with your knowledge of the constitution no matter the responses the registrar always declared blacks not capable of voting

social segregation laws (started in Atlanta) movement from political disenfranchisement to social segregation President Woodrow Wilson orders segregation of workers (white houses)

a character in a cheap entertainment show for a white audience where white actors made fun of blacks in a derogatory way

"Separate but equal" Plessy was 1/8 black and was moved to the segregated car he took the case to the supreme court but lost

the belief in both the north and south by the most established universities that whites and blacks were fundamentally different due to evolutionary pathways. The belief that anglo's were more fit for democracy than african americans

thinks slavery was a civilizing institution and that the slaveowners were the victims

the accusation of a black man raping a white woman; in reality it was the white men raping the black women

a social event where a mob kills someone for an alleged offense without a trial shows that the whites are more dominant and the blacks better behave

a black man is accused of raping a white woman when she has a mixed child the blacks make an alarm system to sound when the sheriff moves him to avoid him being lynched

he is released of the crime and it shows that blacks have strong economic power and community ties which affected the patterns of violence

called reconstruction a splendid failure and called for higher education he emphasized interconnection between economic, social and political rights

Washington emphasized economic rights but was careful with the other two Washington wanted to compromise while Du Bois wanted to fight

Called for by DU Bois- top 10% of race to help elevate African Americans

Du Bois- wanted full manhood suffrage and wanted it NOW (no gradualism)

Du Bois Founded by black and white people (interracial movement for black equality)

he was a fair skinned african american writer ODR: anyone with any amount of AA blood is black He wrote books about these issues calling for change and became very active in movement for blacks rights

he says that disenfranchisement is a contagious disease, accusing the south of robbing the AA of political and social rights. he says the negro is suffering from taxation without representation and the race cannot advance without votes **political change is needed to turn away the tide of disenfranchisement

sues a railroad company for moving her to a segregated car and saying she wasn't a lady (she bit the train conductors)

3 of her friends were lynched b/c of economic competition She became an activist to publicize lynching, something people didn't usually talk about, and used words such as rape to make sure people couldn't ignore the issues
