the phase of the cell cycle in which a cell will divide. It is broken up into two main events: mitosis and cytokinesis.

identical sister strands of genetic material in a chromosome.

the "button" in the center of a chromosome that holds two sister chromatids together.

small structures in the cytoplasm of animal cells that organize and attach spindle fibers to assist in the splitting of chromosomes.

fanlike "fishing lines" that attach to the centromere of chromosomes and act to separate sister chromatids during mitosis.

the portion of the M Phase during which a cell's genetic material is divided between two daughter cells. It includes 4 steps: prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase.

the first phase of mitosis. During this phase, copied chromosomes condense and become visible, attaching to each other with a centromere, centrioles move to opposite sides of the cell, spindle fibers begin to form, and the nuclear membrane begins to break down.

the second phase of mitosis. During this phase, chromosomes line up at the center of the cell with spindle fibers attached form centrioles to their centromeres.

the third phase of mitosis. During this phase, centromeres are pulled apart and sister chromatids are pulled apart to become individual chromosomes on opposite sides of the cell.

the fourth phase of mitosis. During this phase, the cell itself begins to pinch along the cleavage furrow, while within the cell the nuclear membrane reforms, chromosomes spread out into a tangle of chromatin, the spindle fibers break up, and the (two) nucleolus becomes visible.

the deepening ridge where an animal cell pinches itself off during mitosis to create two identical daughter cells.

the portion of the M Phase in which the final division of a body cell occurs, splitting apart the cytoplasm to create two identical cells.

in a plant cell, this structure forms in the center of a cell that has completed mitosis in order to form two distinct cells. It does so because the cell wall is too rigid to pinch off along the cleavage furrow.
