Unlock answersquestion
Frontal Bone
answer
Includes forehead, part of nasal cavity, main portion of the roof of the eye orbits, and the nose
question
Parietal Bones
answer
There are 2 parietal bones one on each side of the head. They form the sides and roof of the skull & are joined at the midline by the saggtal suture. They join the occipital, the frontal, the temporal, & the sphenoid bones.
question
CRANIAL BONES
answer
22 BONES MAKE UP THE CRANIAL BONES. ONE FRONTAL, TWO PARIETAL, TWO TEMPORAL, ONE SPHENOID, ONE OCCIPITAL, AND ONE ETHMOID.
question
TEMPORAL BONES
answer
LOCATED AT THE SIDES AND BASE OF THE SKULL. PROJECTING FROM THE ANTERIOR PORTION OF EACH TEMPORAL BONE IS THE ZYGOMATIC PROCESS, WHICH MEETS THE ZYGOMATIC BONE (CHEEKBONE). LOWER PORTION OF THIS FAN SHAPED BONE INCLUDES A DEPRESSION CALLED THE GLENOID FOSSA WHICH IS A SHALLOW DEPRESSION THAT ARTICULATES, OR JOINS WITH, THE MANDIBLE.
question
Sphenoid Bone
answer
Also called the "butterfly bone" articulates with all the other cranial bones to bind them together. The greater wings of the sphnoid bone form the sides of the skull and are located anterior to the temporal bones.
question
Ethmoid Bone
answer
A light spongy bone situated between the 2 orbits of the eyes. It forms the bony wall of the nasal septum and encases the ethmoid sinuses.
question
Occipital Bone
answer
Situated at the back (posterior) and base of the cranium. A large opening called the FORAMEN MAGNUM allows the spinal cord to pass through this bone into the brain.
question
FACIAL BONES
answer
THERE ARE 13 STATIONARY BONES AND ONE MOVABLE BONE. ONLY THE MANDIBLE (JAW) MOVES. THEY FORM THE BASIC SHAPE OF THE FACE AND PROVIDE ATTACHMENT FOR THE FACIAL MUSSCLES.
question
Nasal Bones
answer
Small oblong bones that are fused at the midline and form the bridge of the nose. They articulate (join) with the frontal, ethmoid, and maxillary bones.
question
MAXILLA
answer
THE 2ND LARGEST BONE OF THE FACE. MADE UP OF 2 PORTIONS JOINED BY A MEDIAN SUTURE. SPONGY/POROUS/CANCELLOUS TYPE OF BONE.
question
AVEOLAR PROCESS
answer
THICKEST & MOST SPONGY PART OF THE MAXILLARY BONE & CONTAINS SOCKETS FOR THE TEETH.
question
MAXILLARY TUBEROSITY/ MAXILLARY ALVEOLAR BONE
answer
THE MOST POSTERIOR PORTION OF THE MAXILLARY ALVEOLAR BONE, BEHIND THE MOLARS, AND IS A ROUNDED PROJECTION OF A BONE
question
Lacrimal Bones
answer
The smallest and most fragile bones of the face. They are very thin; situated at the front part of the inner wall of the eye orbit anterior to the ethmoid bones; and CONTAIN THE TEAR DUCTS.
question
ZYGOMATIC BONES
answer
THE ZYGOMATIC OR MALAR BONE, IS A PAIRED BONE, WITH ONE ON EACH SIDE OF THE HUMAN SKULL.
question
PALATINE BONES
answer
CONSIST OF A HORIZONTAL AND VERTICAL PLATE. THE HORIZONTAL PLATE FORMS THE HARD PALATE AND CONTAINS THE MEDIAN PALATINE SUTURE. THE VERTICAL PLATE IS A THIN OBLONG FORM THAT RISES UP BEHIND THE NOSE TO MEET THE ORBITS OF THE EYES. IT IS THE SOFT AND HARD PALATE. IF THIS PALATE IS OPEN IT IS CALLED A CLEFT PALATE.
question
Inferior Turbinate
answer
Each side of the outer wall of the nasal fossa has a thin layer of curled bone called the inferior turbinate, ALSO KNOWN AS THE INFERIOR NASAL CONCHA. These bones provide support for the mucous membranes.
question
Vomer Bone
answer
It's a single bone situated vertically at the back of the nasal fossa, and FORMS PART OF THE SEPTUM/PORTION OF THE NOSE.
question
MANDIBLE
answer
DERIVED FROM LATIN WORD MEANING, TO CHEW. THE LONGEST AND STRONGEST BONE OF THE FACE (IT'S U SHAPED) AND HOLDS THE TEETH OF THE LOWER JAW.
question
RETROMOLAR AREA (part of the mandible)
answer
PAD OR SPACE THAT'S LOCATED DISTAL (to the rear) OF THE 3RD MOLAR.
question
INTERNAL OBLIQUE RIDGE (MYLOHYOID LINE) (Part of the Mandible)
answer
INSIDE OF THE JAW/MANDIBLE - SLANTED BONY GROWTH RIDGE
question
MENTAL FORAMEN (Part of the Mandible)
answer
SMALL OPENING SITUATED ON THE LEFT AND RIGHT ANTERIOR AREAS OF THE MANDIBLE USED FOR THE PASSAGE OF NERVES AND BLOOD VESSELS.
question
EXTERNAL OBLIQUE RIDGE
answer
OUTSIDE OF THE JAW/MANDIBLE. SLANTED BONY GROWTH RIDGE ON THE FACIAL SIDE OF THE MANDIBLE.
question
CONDYLE (Part of the Mandible)
answer
PART OF THE MANDIBLE THAT RESTS IN A DEPRESSION IN THE TEMPORAL BONE CALLED THE GLENOID OR MANDIBULAR FOSSA.
question
TEMPOROMANDIBULAR JOINT (TMJ)
answer
UNION OF THE JOINTS OF THE TEMPORAL AND MANDIBULAR BONES. COMPOSED OF CONDYLE OF THE MANDIBLE AND THE GLENOID FOSSA. IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE VERTICLE & LATERAL MOVEMENT OF THE LOWER JAW.
question
HYOID BONE
answer
A U SHAPED BONE THAT'S SUSPENDED IN THE NECK AND ATTACHED TO THE NECK BY MUSCLES OF THE TONGUE. IT SUPPORTS THE TONGUE AND PROVIDES ATTACHMENT FOR NUMEROUS MUSCLES
