Athenian boys were taught by their mother or male slave until age 6 or 7. They went to school between ages 6 and 14. They learned reading, writing, arithmetic, literature, sports, and music. Began military training at age 18. Sometimes they continued their education with a private tutor if they were wealthy.

Women in Athens were not citizens, could not choose their husbands, and could not own much property. Sometimes they were priestesses. They managed their households and didn't go out alone. Slaves in Athens were either born slaves or had been captured in war. They performed a variety of jobs, some of them highly skilled. Sometimes they worked in silver mines.

Athens was called a democracy because every citizen could take part in the city's government. Laws had to be approved by the assembly. Every citizen was part of the assembly, which debated and voted on all laws. To be a part of the council of 500, you must be chosen by a random drawing.

Athenians got the goods they needed for everyday life by trading with foreign lands and other city states. Buying and selling goods in the agora, or marketplace. Using coins, which made trade easier.

To protect the city-state, boys and girls were trained to fight from age 7. ( military training). Boys were taught how to suffer pain without complaining.

Women in Sparta lived the same life as the men. They were expected to be strong and ready to fight. Looked after their husbands property when they were gone. Could own and control property. Slaves in Sparta were treated harshly. Were killed if it thought they might rebel. Could marry freely. Could sell extra crops. Could buy their freedom.

Sparta was called an oligarchy because the real power was in the hands of a few people. The important decisions were made by the council of elders. Council members had to be at least 60 and wealthy. Council members served for life. The assembly had little power. The assembly did not debate issues. Because of their geography they were suspicious of outsiders.
