question
osmosis
answer
movement of water across a semi-permeable membrane
question
How does water move across a membrane?
answer
moves toward a high concentration of solute
question
hypertonic
answer
shrink bc water is moving out
question
isotonic
answer
normal
question
hyptonic
answer
burst bc water is moving in
question
What was the diagnosis for Clark?
answer
cerebral edema- associated with decreased blood Na levels and increased metric pressure
question
What direction was the water moving when Clark had cerebral edema?
answer
out
question
What treatment was clark given?
answer
a hypertonic solution- decreased metric pressure and achieved homeostasis
question
What direction did the water move after Clark was treated with a hypertonic solution?
answer
water moved in to the vessel
question
Summary of clinical observations for Clark
answer
increased Na concentration in matrix of brain caused water from blood to move in to the brain which increased the matrix pressure. Pressure caused the neuron firing rate to increase which increased the likelihood of seizures. Hypertonic saline was administered to increase Na in blood which caused water to move back into veins. Matrix Pressure is normal and the NFR decreased which stop seizures.
