Gamal Abdel Nasser, Egypt's leader, reacted to the Western powers cutting off aid to Egypt by seizing the canal, which was owned by France and Britain. France, Britain, and Israel joined to attack Egypt. The US, along with the Soviets and the rest of the UN, pressured the attackers to withdraw from Egypt
