-Kitty side swiped a football players car -He followed her onto a bridge and caught in traffic -He got out of his car and flung Kitty out of hers -He beat her car with a tire iron & then beat her up -She escaped & clung to the side of the bridge -His friends then proceeded to command her to jump -She then jumped and drowned -All of this happened in front of 38 witnesses who stood around and did nothing to help Kitty

Individuals are less likely to offer help when there are other bystanders

Experimenter A & Experimenter B + A subject Experimenter A sits next to someone on subway Ex. B gets on the subway and asks which way the subway was going Ex. A jumps in and says the wrong direction no matter what The test is to see in which conditions the subject will correct the experimenter

When experimenter A provided incorrect information the subway rider rarely intervened unless the rider had been directly asked to provide the information
