Change is inevitable, and every person from birth goes through the development process, both in their reasoning abilities and physical development. The cognitive development in humanity is the proof of why there exist different ability in people as they grow up, and human brains and reasoning ability keep changing depending on their age and experience they usually witness in their environment. In William Perry’s initial research on the cognitive development, he brought forth nine stages of cognitive development which are summed up in three essential steps, Dualism, relativism, and commitment. The understanding of the cognitive development process became vivid to me when was in my adolescent, and I came to believe that people reasoning ability develop to appoint every individual needs to enjoy some level of autonomy and believe in their decisions.

The first stage of cognitive development is the dualism which happens to young people. This phase is based on received knowledge and despite the of existence of right and wrong answers in life, the fundamental dualism shows that all problems are solvable, and the student task is to learn the right solutions, this is confirmed in the full dualism where the student learns the correct answer and ignore the others. The second stage is the multiplicity, the subjective knowledge, which shows the existence of two kinds of problems, solvable and those which are not known yet. At this phase the student gets to trust their inner voice to avoid the confusion of the conflicting interest, this leads to relativism which shows the existence of disciplinary reasoning methods. At this stage, all solutions are supported by reasons and must be viewed in context and about

support, in this regard the best solution is dependable on the framework of the matter and the students are taxed to evaluate the solutions (Perry 67). This stage leads to the pre-commitment stage where students find it important to make choices and be committed to a particular solution. At this stage students more so those at their 18 years old tend to stand to their opinion as they believe in their reasoning. As it was in my case, at 18 the of age, I did think that I was big enough make the decision on my own and getting out with friends needed no permission from my parents particularly my mother who I saw as quite a bother and I believe that students need freedom for growth as there are some knowledge which are acquired through experience and this disregard the terming of relativism stage as ‘a suit of amour’.

The final stage is the commitment phase, a stage of constructed knowledge. At this stage, students integrate knowledge learned from others with their personal experience and reflection. At the same time students get to learn the existence of uncertainty in life and use knowledge acquired from outside sources to help them arrive at conclusions, they realize the commitment is an ongoing process, unfolding and evolving activity where one has to rely on other sources of knowledge to draw conclusions.

In conclusion, every individual was born with innate ability to growth and reasoning ability but despite this inner strength every person has to go through a process of dualism where one is young and only believes in the right solutions, they later learn at multiplicity stage of the

existence of solvable problem and those to which their solutions are not at hand with them. When relativism stage dawns on them, they get to appreciate the contextual reasoning, at this point which in most cases starts at adolescents the student tend to believe in their decision making, and finally, get to accept the existence of uncertainty in life, hence start depending on outdoor experience to arrive at solutions.
