Two major ways - rotation and revolution

The spinning of the Earth on its axis, day and night (24 hours)

The movement of one object around another, Earth around the sun, year; 365 1/4 days

A system of organizing time that defines the beginning, length, and divisions of a year. Early cultures used astronomy to help develop calendars.

Because the Earth's axis is tilted as it revolves around the sun. Different locations on the Earth's revolution dictate different seasons.

During the Earth's revolution around the sun, this is when the sun is farthest north or south of the equator, twice a year - summer and winter

This is when the day and night are about twelve hours long everywhere on Earth (equal day and night); neither hemisphere is tilted toward or away from the sun; twice a year - spring and autumn
