Vocabulary Set 2 Flashcard

Alkaline Earth Metal
Any element from group 2; Beryllium, Magnesium, Calcium, Strontium, Barium, Radium.
Alkali Metal
Any element from group 1; Lithium, Sodium, Potassium, Rubidium, Cesium, Francium.
Anion
A negative ion.
Atomic Radius
A measure of the size of its atoms, usually the mean or typical distance from the nucleus to the boundary of the surrounding cloud of electrons.
Brittle
Hard but liable to break or shatter easily.
Cation
A positive ion.
Diatomic Molecule
Molecules composed only of 2 atoms, of either the same or different chemical elements; Hydrogen, Nitrogen, Oxygen, & Carbon Monoxide.
Ductile
Property of a metal.
Dull
Lacking brightness, vividness, or sheen.
Electro-Negativity
The measure of the ability of an atom in a bond to attract electrons.
Group
The elements in a vertical column of the periodic table.
Halogen
Any element from group 17; Fluorine, Chlorine, Bromine, Iodine, Astatine.
Ionization Energy
The minimal energy required to remove (to infinity) one mole of electrons from one mole of gaseous atoms or molecules isolated in free space & in its ground electronic state.
Luster
A gentle sheen or soft glow, especially that of a partly reflective surface.
Malleable
Property of a metal, meaning it can be pounded or rolled into thin sheets.
Metal
An element that has luster, conducts heat & electricity, & usually bends without breaking.
~Groups 1-12.
Metalloid
An element with some physical & chemical properties of metals & other properties of non-metals.
Non-Metal
An element that does NOT conduct electricity.
Period
A horizontal row on the periodic table.
Reactive
Showing a response to a stimulus.
Transition Metal
Any of the set of metallic elements occupying a central block in the periodic table. Iron, Manganese, Chromium, & Copper.
