It is non “better” from a Christian point of view to “believe” than non to believe. to “have religion” than non to hold it. There is no route from belief to faith.
You can’t transform a strong belief of the value of rites into the act of standing entirely in the presence of God. The contrary is true: every belief is an obstruction to faith. Beliefs get in the manner because they satisfy the demand for faith. because they lead to religious picks that are substitutes for religion ; they prevent us from detecting. listening to. and accepting the religion revealed in Jesus Christ. Faith shatters all faith and everything religious. On the other manus. the transition from religion to belief is ever possible and ever a menace. It is the declivitous slide to which the church and the Christian life are ever capable.
Faith is invariably devolving into multiple beliefs. No phrase expresses this unperceivable alteration better than “to have faith. ” When we take ownership of religion and claim to be the owner of religion. we of course think we can dispose of it as we wish. The lone thing we are truly entitled to state is that “Faith has me. ” The remainder is mere belief. Faith is neither belief nor credulity. neither a sensible acquisition or an rational accomplishment ; it is instead the concurrence of an ultimate determination and a disclosure. and commands me bring about the embodiment.
