“What is the significance of life? ” is likely the most-asked philosophical inquiry by humanity at big. Common replies include: felicity or flourishing ; love ; compassion ; pleasance ; power ; cognition. apprehension. or wisdom ; and being blessed. or accomplishing brotherhood with God or the Godhead ; or merely that there is no significance to life. Philosophers. spiritual governments. creative persons. scientists. and infinite ordinary people have thought a great trade about the inquiry. In fact. the really construct has become such a platitude that it has frequently been parodied. What does it intend to inquire what the significance of life is?

When people ask for a significance of life. they are inquiring for life’s intent. justification. or end — non a “meaning” in the sense in which words have significance. The definition of life is an interesting issue in its ain right. nevertheless. particularly as associating to unreal and extraterrestrial life. We can besides divide this inquiry into two different inquiries ; one about the nonsubjective intent of life. and the other about subjective intent of life. The subjective intent of life varies of class from individual. and need non be considered any farther.

Many deny that an nonsubjective intent of anything is possible. Purposes. they argue. are strictly subjective. Others claim that life has an nonsubjective intent. though they differ as to what this intent is. or where it comes from. Subjects that one might contemplate. related to the significance of life. include: • What sort of life is worth populating? • What should we. as persons. seek to make or be in our lives? This is a basic inquiry of moralss. peculiarly virtue moralss. which asks how we should develop our characters. • Is at that place a end toward which society. or the universe. is achieving?

Many spiritual trusters hold that the universe will be transformed or redeemed in the hereafter by godly intercession — such as the Second Coming of Christ. or the terminal of the Hindu Kali Yuga. Some secular belief-systems. such as Marxism. have besides held out a telos or ideal end-state of society. toward which disciples might endeavor. • Is at that place a end or intent I myself am meant to carry through? Some individuals feel an single sense of fate or intent. whereas others do non. Many respect this kind of sense of intent as psychologically valuable. but of no metaphysical import.

• Can I happen satisfaction in my life? How so? Utilitarianism considers felicity or satisfaction to be the intent of our lives. but different doctrines have widely changing definitions of satisfaction. Epicurus saw satisfaction as moderateness and freedom from fright. Gautama Buddha saw it as the release from enduring caused by desires and demands. Harry Browne wrote a libertarian ego aid book on happening felicity through freedom. Religion itself. it is frequently suggested. is a response to humanity’s hunt for significance or intent.

Indeed. the kingdom outside life itself referred to in the old transition could be interpreted as the spiritual or religious kingdom. Most people who believe in a personal God would hold that it is God “in Whom we live and move and have our being” . The impression here is that we do or ought to seek a higher intent that will give our lives intending. One peculiar position on how faith “answers” the intent for human life is given in the Christian narrative of creative activity: That the intent for adult male is to “Be fruitful. and multiply. and refill the Earth. and subdue it…

” Gen 1:28 Indicating that the extension of the human race. the attention and Restoration of the Earth. and the control of our environment are the three ends God has set for adult male. Another perspective expressions at the history of what God has taught adult male. and so summarized. However. this does non assist the non-religious individual in covering with the inquiry “What is the Meaning of Life? ” when it is asked in a philosophical context. It is non a complete reply to state “Believe. and you will understand” . as this relies on religion in the delivered truth instead than logical or rational justification.

Islams point of view is that God created adult male for one intent merely and that is to idolize God. I merely created genie and adult male to idolize Me. ( Qur’an. 51:56 ) Strictly theological replies raise other inquiries. For case. if we exist to obey. how does obeying better us? If we live to idolize God. what is God’s intent? Even for the spiritual. dogmatic jussive moods may non be satisfactory. Life is a Mystery to be Lived Jafree Ozwald Life is a enigma to be lived. non a job to be solved. ~ Osho There are three basic responses to life. The first is defying what is.

Our organic structure contracts. tightens in and constricts when we feel threatened. out of control or hurt in some manner. The 2nd is leting what is. This is an experience of trust. release and enlargement. We interpret life as a safe. loving and nurturing topographic point. and we relax. allow travel. Our lives experience unfastened and broad. The 3rd. which contains constituents of the first two. is a impersonal non-identified response. When we are genuinely degage. we have no sentiment. and are free from all signifiers of judgement and restriction of any experience that arises. One of the greatest approvals to humanity is your sensitiveness. your consciousness. ~ Osho

In each of these responses is the possibility of detecting your ain consciousness. So that we may basically be able to see more of our ain being. If you take a close expression and notice. all three of these experiences happen to you mundane. On some subtle or intense degree. your bodymind will contract with agony. expand with joy. or non truly hold any peculiar response at all. It all depends on where your consciousness is fixated on. Wherever your attending goes. the experience flows. If you are attached or avoiding certain people. ideas. feelings or experiences you will make some signifier of agony.

Exceeding enduring agencies encompassing and let go ofing each of the three learned responses. instantly as they arise. Life is the school. love is the lesson. ~Bumper Sticker Our tempers. attitudes. and personalities are formed by our perceptual experience of world. The colour of the bluish sky may be really calming and comforting to some miss who is lying on her dorsum in a warm field of grass. being absorbed by the deep blue yonder. An air traffic accountant may non even notice the sky has any colour at all. as he is panicking about two planes seeking to set down at the same clip.

A immature kid may non even cognize what the colour blue is. and can be looking at the sky and non even see that there is anything at that place at all. If I create from the bosom. about everything plants ; if from the caput. about nil. ~Marc Chagall Where we focus our attending determines what we will see. However. the indispensable key to life command is being present and unfastened to sing each new minute. whatever it brings. Being cognizant of your body’s signals that are ever stating you when you are attached or in turning away of anything.

Merely being an unfastened vas to sing life. in all its spirits and colourss. we let travel or necessitating to ever be in control and start to flux with the river. High and low experiences will continuously go on through us. Yet whether we choose to defy the negative or bent on to the positive is what determines our freedom. Life is non measured by the figure of breaths we take. but by the minutes that take our breath off. ~Author Unknown How frequently have you found yourself gripping with anxiousness or fright over some state of affairs you thought was traveling to go on yet ne’er did?

It’s an mundane happening for many people who are caught in some signifier of over-identification from our hype-driven society. We all have been trained. programmed and conditioned to respond ( alternatively of reacting consciously ) to information that we hear. feel and see with an unconscious yet instantaneous contraction. Several old ages ago. many scientists did a survey on human perceptual experience and found that we spend merely 2 % of our clip in world ( the present minute ) . The other 98 % of our clip is spent in semblances our head creates about the yesteryear and the hereafter. We are wholly losing the world that is truly go oning now.

Research done on people who’ve had near decease experiences has shown there are two inquiries that are ever asked at the ‘pearly gates’ of Eden. # 1 What did you lend? # 2 You compared to you. how much of your potency did you utilize? ~ Elisabeth Kubler-Ross Every one of us ( to some grade ) has an interior “drama addict” who is unconsciously addicted to hearing about the latest town chitchat. what awful things are go oning in the universe. and even gets sucked into the bang of watching some stressed out dramatic film. We feel lost if life starts to go insistent. dry or predictable.

So we tend to make this tenseness in our head by acquiring excessively involved with play around us and stop up making more jobs for ourselves than were there antecedently. This unconscious wrecker scheduling. is what happens when we step out. When we avoid certain ideas and feelings in our organic structures about the life state of affairss we are truly in. we tend to replace them with these other dramatic semblances. We would instead populate our full lives in this illusional dramatic universe instead than allow it travel. confront the unknown and unrecorded wholly in the unknown. a province of amorphous non-identified World.

“The monetary value of our verve is the amount of all our frights. We are on the homeward journey. Everything in your life is grist for the factory of that journey. ” ~ David Whyte My message to you today is that everything you experience in your is portion of your way to rousing. All roads lead to Rome. and all waies lead to Enlightenment. Life is a enigma to be lived. enjoyed. and celebrated. Your hereafter will incorporate both painful and pleasure full experiences. Yet how you choose to react to this fortunes is ever up to you! When you decide to plunge heart-first into each experience to the full. you will hold the life you ever wanted to see.

Your bosom will be unfastened. the enigma of life is revealed to you in each minute wholly and absolutely as it ever was. So be cognizant when you are judging what person may state following. or trying to keep onto something that is already gone. your true limitless ego ( that is ebullient with life ) can merely be found in this present minute. This presence that you are is this beaming beginning of cloud nine. It is the lone topographic point you can detect true freedom in your life. The here and now is the lone topographic point we will of all time happen it. Roll uping Sacred Moments Annie B. Bond. Ph. D

Most of us acquire on occasion frazzled. overwhelmed. or drained ; some of us may experience as though we’ve lost touch with ourselves in some really existent and appalling manner. Contact with our “larger self” provides merely the counterpoison we all need. When we can take the position of our Larger Self. we can see what is sacred to us. in our life. and in the people all around us. In fact. it is merely when life seems most hard that it can assist most to retrieve ourselves by making what the writer calls “collecting sacred minutes. ” the aglow minutes that shine through the mundaneness of life.

These help us by reminding us that we are more than the individual fighting to acquire through the twenty-four hours. Sacred minutes don’t have to be immense or dramatic. When the writer asked one client to remember a sacred minute from the old hebdomad. she said. “The first thing I think of was waking up existent early last Thursday. I was all entirely. and I could be still. and imbibe my cup of java and look out the window at the trees. That was a sacred minute for me. ” She besides remembered another. during the pre-dinner hr when her kids. like most others. are disposed to be tender. but alternatively her hubby took the clip to roughhouse and laugh with them.

Sacred minutes don’t have to be perfect. Another adult female remembered 45 proceedingss stuck in a traffic jam with her hubby as sacred because they used the clip for a good talk alternatively of acquiring tense or combat. Sacred minutes show us what we value. When we remember them and threading them together. they become a sacred retelling of the life we are populating. Appreciation is an of import facet of the Larger Self. As Brenner says. “I’ve found that the witting act of grasp has enormous benefits. In fact. grasp appreciates.

That is. whatever you appreciate gets larger and becomes more manifest in your life. giving you even more to appreciate. Finding what there is to appreciate is like irrigating a seed that will turn and better your life. It helps you to remain connected to yourself. It helps you to maintain the bud of your spirit unfastened. without shrinking into surrender. ” Create Your Own Sacred Space Sacred infinite is a topographic point you create that is yours entirely and in which you seek sanctuary from the day-to-day uproar of life. It is a topographic point where you come to seek counsel. to be nurtured. and to honour those who assist you.

Find out how the Native American Quero Apache create sacred infinite. You will be surprised how simple it is to do this spirit-honoring. alimentary topographic point for yourself. One manner to make sacred infinite is to make an communion table that holds points that you feel particularly drawn to. feeling empowered in their presence. Or your sacred infinite may be every bit simple as a taper. If you choose to make a ocular manifestation of the Medicine Wheel the writer suggests garnering eight points that each represent an property of the waies of the compass: South. Southwest. West. Northwest. North. Northeast. East. and Southeast.

Topographic point these points in a circle in a sunwise way. In the halfway topographic point a taper. which will supply a focal point during your supplications and speculation. This communion table can be a lasting fixture or one that is placed out merely when you desire to seek as province of supplication. This sacred infinite represents your religious kernel. and even if you are incognizant of it at the clip of building. the points signify the ushers that aid you in these unambiguously powerful directional energies. Sacred Moments: Influencing our Stress and Well-Being Elisha Goldstein. Ph. D & A ; Stefanie Goldstein. Ph. D.

The great lesson from the true mystics. from the Zen Monks. and now besides from the Humanistic and Transpersonal psychologists – that the sacred is in the ordinary. that it is to be found in one’s day-to-day life. in one’s neighbours. friends. and household. in one’s back pace. and that travel may be a flight from facing the sacred – this lesson can be easy lost. To be looking elsewhere for miracles is to me a certain mark of ignorance that everything is marvelous. ( Abraham Maslow ) I am a Psychologist and heedfulness instructor in the bay country and have studied and practiced the art of cultivating sacred minutes in day-to-day life.

I came to this through my ain journey of recognizing that I was so bombarded by so much stimulation and information and felt a pull to automatically rehash the yesteryear or whirl our wheels over the hereafter that I felt I was losing the life that was in forepart of me. in the here and now. I grew up with a rabbinic male parent who would come place after being with assorted people on their decease beds and he would portion with me their ideas. “If I merely had it to make over. I wouldn’t have spent so much clip in the office. I would hold been more present with the people I loved” .

I felt there was a sacredness or costliness to life that I wasn’t paying attending to every bit much as I wanted. It’s hard to acknowledge the costliness of life when we’re non go toing to it. I had to look at my life. Not surprisingly. I noticed that our media. which has become oculus confect to many. more frequently than non pull us into negative content that fills our heads. In my research on cultivating sacred minutes in day-to-day life. I found that there is a lifting sum of emphasis in western society that appears to be due to the increasing complexness of duties and events ( i. e. . 9/11 ) .

Well. emphasis is a precursor to anxiousness. and over 19 million Americans are afflicted with some type of anxiousness upset today. Furthermore. upsets such as anxiousness critically impact quality of life and wellbeing. Although current research is working towards detecting factors that influence wellbeing. there is still a form of hedging the qualities of sacred minutes in mention to mental wellness and wellbeing. With the field’s relentless accent on techniques toward mental wellness that do non explicitly affect the sacred and the transcendent. it seems critical to go on to tap this country for its value to our ain lives.

To endorse this up the demand for this in our society. an electronic hunt of Psychological Abstracts in psychology’s last 100 old ages reveals a 14 to 1 ratio of psychological articles about negative emotions versus positive emotions. The instability in research of negative versus positive makes it of all time more of import to inquire the inquiry. what does it intend to populate the good life? The good intelligence! There is revival in the universe of concentrating on this very inquiry! Religious bookmans to philosophers to modern twenty-four hours psychologists have pondered the perennial inquiry of what it means to populate good.

In the past few decennaries at that place has been a considerable rush in involvement and research on the phenomena of wellbeing. The faculty members have distilled two different types of wellbeing through the old ages. subjective wellbeing ( SWB ) or felicity and psychological wellbeing ( PWB ) or experiential well- being that have emerged as the most outstanding constructs in mainstream psychological research. SWB focuses more on positive/negative emotion and life satisfaction while PWB is concerned with significance. intent. and experiential issues.

Through through empirical observation validated surveies. research in each field has created a manner to mensurate these concepts of wellbeing. Empirical research suggests that. in sing an attack to prosecuting a lifestyle conducive to good overall wellness and wellbeing. an of import factor is cultivating a sense of sacredness in one’s life. Recent surveies show a high positive connexion between the manner we think and feel in relation to the sacred and wellbeing. Some surveies suggest that linking with the transcendent and sing a surpassing sense of self surrogate wellbeing.

Other surveies find that wellbeing is positively correlated with a sense of support from the transcendent in countries such as matrimony. rearing. healthy household relationships. and prolonging physical wellness. Robert Emmons and Michael McCullough applied a new intercession that focuses on furthering gratitude and linked it to life satisfaction and a sense of intent in life. Furthermore. our ideas and emotions associated with the sacred have positive connexions among themselves. connoting that when sing one facet. others may be felt at the same clip.

These surveies underscore the construct that there is a important positive connexion between what are considered sacred constituents of life and wellbeing and a negative connexion to emphasis. It can hence be argued that an intercession cultivating these sacred constituents may increase wellbeing and cut down emphasis. Sacred Qualities and Sacred Moments A big organic structure of theory has described a wide spectrum of experiences that may or may non be considered a sacred minute. The cardinal facet of a sacred minute. as defined and described in the survey that I did. is that it is a minute in clip that is imbued with sacred qualities.

What are sacred qualities? Good inquiry. For the intents of this survey. sacred qualities were defined as holding two constituents: ( a ) they inherently possess religious qualities as defined by Lynn Underwood and the World Health Organization. such as thankfulness. feeling of connexion with and support from the transcendent. sweet- unhappiness. awe. compassion. and/or a deep sense of interior peace. and ( B ) they are imbued with descriptive qualities such as cherished. beloved. blessed. cherished. and/or sanctum.

Consequently. for the intents of this survey. sacred minutes are defined as daily personal minutes that are imbued with sacred qualities. which seem like time-outs from day-to-day busy-ness. where a sense of hush arises or occurs and where concerns of the every twenty-four hours merely seem to vaporize. In other words. in order to see a sacred minute. the minute needs to be imbued by the person with these sacred qualities. Although extraordinary mystical experiences could besides be considered sacred minutes. the focal point of this research was on those more ordinary daily experiences.

So how do we cultivate them? A nucleus facet in cultivating these minutes is being able to go to to the present minute. Different methods have been developed over the last decennary to assist the single control attending. including ; hypnosis. biofeedback. and gestalt therapy. However. heedfulness seems to be the most popular and easy accessible way to going present in the minute. Mindfulness has been defined as a method of concentrating attending on the present as it occurs. Learning how to develop the head and organic structure to be in the present minute is critical to being cognizant of what is sacred in the minute.

Find an object that has particular significance to you. This could be touchable or intangible. One participant in my survey found a works. another used clouds. another used a household heirloom. and yet another idea of a memory. Take a few minutes to go present and so somewhat switch your attending to this sacred or cherished object and get down to deliberately go to to it somewhat slower than usual. Notice how it looks. feels. sounds. odors. and if it’s nutrient. gustatory sensations! Then notice the ideas and emotions that arise. acknowledge that they are at that place. and allow them be.

It is ever good to be guided in a pattern. but this one you could besides experiment with on your ain. What I found after analyzing 73 people around the state was that they were able to cultivate these minutes for 5 proceedingss a twenty-four hours for 5 yearss a hebdomad for 3 hebdomads and it had a important consequence on their emphasis degrees and wellbeing. It suggested that cultivating sacred minutes could be used as a curative intercession in our lives. One adult male explained how. through this procedure. he was able to see sacred minutes for the first clip: [ I experienced sacred minutes ] through this procedure.

I ne’er noticed any religious minutes before this… [ the words ] unique. sanctum and worthy of fear was non within the range of my rational reaction of things. To be able to pray was something that I was non willing to [ make ] . Because of the innovative nature of weaving spiritualty into psychological science this survey was so published in the Journal of Clinical Psychology. Psychology is going more interested in those minutes that transcend and include the self-importance. are non-ordinary. and are personal. Arthur Hastings. a prima Transpersonal Psychologist points out:

“These experiences are normally defined as traveling beyond the ordinary sense of individuality or personality to embrace wider dimensions of the mind and the universe. This can include experiences of intense love. enhanced perceptual experience. a sense of unifying into a more comprehensive individuality. religious and spiritual experiences. psychic consciousness. . . . Other definitions suggest that transpersonal agencies optimum wellness and wellbeing. holistic development of the ego and the psychological science of transmutation. ” Belief Mark Crimmins. Talk About Beliefs ( Cambridge. Ma: MIT. 1992 )

Belief is the psychological province in which an person holds a proposition or premiss ( statement ) to be true without needfully being able to adequately turn out its chief contention to other people who may or may non hold. The relationship between belief and cognition is elusive. Believers in a claim typically say that they know that claim. For case. those who believe that the Sun is a God will describe that they know that the Sun is a God. However. the footings belief and cognition are used otherwise by philosophers. Epistemology is the philosophical survey of cognition and belief.

A primary job for epistemology is precisely what is needed in order for us to hold cognition. In a impression derived from Plato’s duologue Theaetetus. doctrine has traditionally defined cognition as justified true belief. The relationship between belief and cognition is that a belief is knowledge if the belief is true. and if the truster has a justification ( sensible and needfully plausible averments / grounds / counsel ) for believing it is true. A false belief is non considered to be knowledge. even if it is sincere. A sincere truster in the level Earth theory does non cognize that the Earth is level.

Similarly. a truth that cipher believes is non knowledge. because in order to be knowledge. there must be some individual who knows it. Subsequently epistemologists have questioned the “justified true belief” definition. and some philosophers have questioned whether “belief” is a utile impression at all. To believe something is to keep a idea or sentiment based upon grounds or an experience true non assumed to be common among all people. The being of grounds that causes one to believe is frequently intangible and may or non be based in fact.

The action of believing person might be based upon history. trust. and experience that might non be readily available to everyone. Because each person has the possible to see life unambiguously. it is necessary to develop the art of believing in order to associate to other people. topographic points. or things. Without the ability to believe. it would be impossible to see in any signifier a topographic point you have ne’er been.

For illustration: merely because we have ne’er been to Mars doesn’t mean that most of us don’t believe that it is at that place. • Believing is the action of sharing unique and personal experience ; i. e. . this pie is great. you should seek it. • Believing is associating to person or something outside of your ego ; i. e. . You say it was dreadfully cold outside?

How atrocious! • Believing is the development of relationships between you and a coveted consequence ; i. e. . “If I want to be president someday. I must analyze difficult. do tonss of friends. and conceal all of the grounds. ” • Believing is the premise or acknowledgment of bing relationships. i. e. a relationship between a crewman and the sea. Two control qualifiers that accompany the construct of believing are “skeptic” and “gullible” . These two constructs are the “pipe and valve” of believing.

To be wholly fleeceable is to believe everything. To be wholly disbelieving is to believe nil. To believe something is to associate to it. Even with the usage of incredulity it can be hard to get away the influence of something. For illustration. before the first UFO sighting. there was no belief and no demand to associate to the thought. Once exposed to the thought. if it is non immediately and wholly dismissed it becomes portion of your universe through believing. even if controlled with incredulity. Disbelieving something is still an look of the believing action. Believing starts with the exposure to a construct or thing outside of your ego.

Sometimes such exposures can be painful. i. e. . the experience of great loss. The desire to non believe can be strong. The act of non believing is the attempt to dissociate or to non associate. Life is the procedure of relationship. Possibly the ground religion ( the pattern of believing ) is so of import to faiths is because believing is the method of associating to things out side of your ego. Believing is a procedure of internalising things that are outside. Likewise. believing is assumed to be imperfect and hence practiced by those seeking to associate to a construct or thing outside of themselves.

Those that pattern religion think that the procedure of believing will alter their current status to better lucifer that thing in which they exercise their religion. Belief and Faith Jacques Ellul Out of the individual verb “to believe” come noun signifiers for two radically antithetical actions: belief and religion. Belief provides replies to people’s inquiries while faith ne’er does. People believe so as to happen confidence. a solution. an reply to their inquiries to manner for themselves a system of beliefs. Faith ( scriptural religion ) is wholly different. The intent of disclosure is non to provide us with accounts. but to acquire us to listen to inquiries.

The individual who listens to God’s word is the merely 1 to hear it ; he or she is separated from the others. becomes alone. merely because the tie that binds that single to God is alone. unlike any other. incommunicable. a alone relationship with a unique. perfectly uncomparable God. God particularizes. singularise the individual to whom He says. “I call you by your name” ( Isa. 45:4 ) . Faith separates people and makes each of them alone. In the Bible “holy” means “separated” . To be holy is to be separated from everyone else. to be made alone for the interest of a undertaking that can be accomplished by no 1 else. which one receives through religion.

Believers find encouragement and cocksureness in the presence of others the cocksureness that those others truly believe and so community life fills up the experiential nothingness. Multiplying the figure of Holy Eucharists. committednesss. and activities gives trusters complete satisfaction in the thick of them they have no demand of oppugning the truth or world of their belief ; activity keeps them busy. But in this state of affairs you can conceive of how unbearable the diverseness of beliefs becomes. There must be neither doubt nor uncertainness. for that would be radically destructive. So diverseness can non be tolerated.

Diversity is ever a beginning of farther inquiries. of self-criticism. and therefore of possible uncertainty so belief is quickly transformed into watchwords. rites. and orthodoxy. Belief is reassuring. Peoples who live in the universe of belief feel safe. On the contrary. religion is everlastingly puting us on the razor’s border. Though it knows that God is the Father. it ne’er minimizes His power. “Who so is this. that even weave and the sea obey Him? ” ( Mark 4:41 ) . That is faith’s inquiry. For belief things are simple: God is almighty. We normalize God. We get comfy with God’s power.

It is faith entirely that can appreciate the enormousness of God. and His true nature. The uncertainty that constitutes an built-in portion of religion concerns myself. non God’s disclosure or His love or the presence of Jesus Christ. It is doubt about the effectivity. even the legitimacy. of what I do and the forces I obey in my church and in society. Furthermore. religion puts itself to the trial. If I discern the stirrings of religion within me. the first regulation is non to lead on myself. non to abandon myself to belief randomly. I have to subject my beliefs to strict unfavorable judgment.

I have to listen to all denials and onslaughts on them. so that I can cognize how solid the object of my religion is. Faith will non stand for half-truths and half-certainties. It obliges me to confront the fact that I am nil. and in so making I receive the gift of everything. One ne’er moves from belief to faith. whereas faith frequently deteriorates into belief. You can’t acquire to faith by manner of any old faith. or belief. or some obscure religious ecstasy. or aesthetic emotions. It is non “better” from a Christian point of view to “believe” than non to believe. to “have religion” than non to hold it. There is no route from belief to faith.

You can’t transform a strong belief of the value of rites into the act of standing entirely in the presence of God. The contrary is true: every belief is an obstruction to faith. Beliefs get in the manner because they satisfy the demand for faith. because they lead to religious picks that are substitutes for religion ; they prevent us from detecting. listening to. and accepting the religion revealed in Jesus Christ. Faith shatters all faith and everything religious. On the other manus. the transition from religion to belief is ever possible and ever a menace. It is the declivitous slide to which the church and the Christian life are ever capable.

Faith is invariably devolving into multiple beliefs. No phrase expresses this unperceivable alteration better than “to have faith. ” When we take ownership of religion and claim to be the owner of religion. we of course think we can dispose of it as we wish. The lone thing we are truly entitled to state is that “Faith has me. ” The remainder is mere belief. Faith is neither belief nor credulity. neither a sensible acquisition or an rational accomplishment ; it is instead the concurrence of an ultimate determination and a disclosure. and commands me bring about the embodiment.
