The Science of Chemistry Vocab Flashcard

Chemical
any substance that has a definite composition-it’s always made of the saem stuff no mater where the chemical comes from.
Chemical Reactions
Changes in chemicals
States of Matter
solid, liquid, or matter
Reactants
In an equation, the substance on the left-hand side of the arrow. Used in the reaction.
Products
Substances on the right-hand side of the arrow. Made by the reaction.
Matter
anything that has mass and volume
Volume
the space an object occupies
Mass
Quantity of matter contained in that object
Weight
the force produced by gravity acting on mass
Quantity
volume being measured
Unit
what the measured volume is reported as
Conversion Factor
a simple ratio that relates two units tht express a measurement of the same quantity
Physical Property
a property that can be determined without changing the nature of the substance
Density
the mass of an object divided by its volume
Chemical Property
Indentified by trying to cause a chemical change
Atoms
The smallest unit of an element that maintains the properties of that element
Pure Substance
a sample of matter, either a single element or a single compound, that has definite chemical and physical properties.
Elements
Pure substances that conain only one kind of atom
Molecule
Two or more atoms combined in a definite ratio
Compounds
a substance made up of atoms of two or more different elements joined by chemical bonds
Mixture
a combination of two or more substances that are not chemically combined
Homogeneous
Describes something that has a uniform structure or composition throughout
Hetereogeneous
composed of dissimiliar components
