The Benefits and Drawbacks of Cloning

Length: 917 words

Science has an enormous influence on our lives and the passed years of exploration in this field impacted all of us. From the moment your alarm clock rings, weather report, transportation and so on. These objects are all about the study of observation, experiment and discoveries of scientist which has shaped the modern technological world for us. The technologies changed everything and even touches the aspect on religion, ethics and morality. Viewing on the twenty-century, the huge breakthrough must be cloning and bioengineering.

This breakthrough had been an interesting topic which involves millions of issues dealing with benefits, risks and views. Cloning is the creating of a genetically identical duplicate of the original, simply a copy of an individual. Scientist have been investigating this issue as early as 1930s and the understanding of the cloning world has grown rapidly by than and it developed massively in the 1990s. Scientist Ian Wilmut produced Dolly the sheep using nuclear transfer method after his ten years work.

Cloning technique can actually improve and benefit a lot of condition globally. Cloning could be used to increase population of endangered animals species which could lead to a better environment and save the nature habitat key chain of wildlife.

It???s also beneficial in medical purpose, including create healthy lungs to cancer patients and produce rare types of blood for hospital usage. Because of small group amount of donors and the scarcity of wildlife habitat, the cloning and bioengineering technique could definitely benefit and improve the society.

Cloning is a natural part of plant life and it is frequently used by backyard gardeners which is some simple and traditional planting, including planting a cloned plant by using leaf cuttings. As the natural clone of plants become popular, scientist started to use a more high-tech process to clone plants which could benefit the society. When plant cloning and bioengineering combines, the result was outstanding, such as increasing food production and creating healthier food, also preserving endangered animals by growing plants that suits what the endangered animal would eat.

These techniques offers a better life to both animals and humans. Nevertheless, there are bad result and dangerous affects. Cloning animals or plants is a bad idea from the medical view. For example, Dolly the sheep died young and suffered from arthritis (painful of joints), also obesity and was euthanized after a progressive lung infection. That was actually what researchers and scientists have expected. So far, cloning has not been perfected and a clone doesn???t really has the exact same genetics of the original animal or plant.

Although genes made the cloned looks like the original one, however other factors decided exactly how that cloned grow and live. Moreover, human twins which is naturally cloned and raised in the same family end up with different faces and personality. One may be more sporty or talented, another would be taller or skinner. Throughout the cloning history, many mammals have been cloned but the cloners are only a copy of another organism that has the exact same DNA as the original.

Therefore, cloning isn???t that useful in society and natural cloning might result better than scientific cloning. Scientist have explored the cloning of both plants and animals. However, they start questioning: if animals can be cloned, are human beings possible? Cloning a plant or animal is as simple as taking an egg and its nucleus, put in DNA of the cloned, turn into an embryo, then implant. Unfortunately, when it comes to human being, things don???t work quite the same. According to the scientists who created Dolly, they mentioned that it is worst if humans are cloned.

One of the major problem includes copying the parent???s medical history meaning that if the parent has cancer at the age of 40, the cloned child would most likely have cancer at that age and the spreading of cancer cells would be completely same. There is also evidence that explains it is dangerous to human body in cloning process because the process will remove proteins that are needed for cells to divide normally and the lost of proteins would lead to a serious consequences which is high risk for the fetus and the pregnant. Beside, the dangerous affects to individual, cloning also affects the society as a whole.

There is a word called ???eugenic??? to recognize the science of improving a human population by controlled breeding. The Nazis has attempt this movement in order to make a ???better??? society with less Jews. In fact, cloning is an even more greater eugenics because the dictatorship countries could hold a campaign of cloning and clone people who would construct the society of people they wished to have. Society by than would not be populated naturally and it would be a race between the countries of the world to gain the best group of genetics.

Cloning have been a huge step in the twenty-century world. It has not only lead to a better life for human but also lead to human reflect on what human being or life means and the future community fortune. The technology of cloning is a great discovery, yet human cloning is not beneficial because there are still too many dangers and unknowns. If scientist would make use of cloning and bioengineering correctly on animals and plants, after all the society could be benefited and cloning may be a technique that we will rely on in the future.
