Study Guide Heredity and Genetics.

Heredity
The passing of traits from there parents to their offspring.

Mutagen
Anything that can cause a mutation in DNA.

Alleles
Two forms of a gene.

Phenotype
An organism’s appearance or what you see.

Sex Chromosomes
Contains genes that determine an offspring’s sex.

Punnet Square
Is a used to visualize all the possible combinations of alleles from the parents.

Chromosomes
A set of instructions for assembling a protein.

Pedigree
A tool used for tracing a trait through generations of a family.

Probability
The mathematical chance that an event will occur.

Genes
The set of instructions donated by each parent

Recessive Trait
Are apparent only when two recessive alleles for the characteristic are inherited.

Genotype
The inherited combination of alleles.

Meiosis
Produces new cells with half the usual number of chromosomes.

Selective
Is when organisms with certain desirable characteristics are mated to produce a new breed.

Dominate Trait
The trait that appears or shows up in an offspring.

Genetic Engineering
The transfer of a gene from the DNA of one organism into another organism, in order to produce an organism with desired traits.
