States of Matter Study Guide

Solid
state of matter in which materials have definite shape & definite volume

Liquid
state of matter in which materials have no definite shape, but definite volume

Gas
a state of matter that has mass and volume but has no definite shape and does not take up a definite amount of space

Sublimation
a phase change in which a substance changes from a solid directly to a gas

Freezing
change of state from a liquid to a solid

Evaporation
change of state from liquid to gas below the substance’s boiling point

Condensation
a phase change where a substance changes from a gas or vapor to a liquid

Temperature
change of state from a solid to a liquid

Plasma
The 4th state of matter is a super-heated gas. When the temperature of a gas gets between 10,000°C and 20,000°C, the particles break apart and become plasma

Dry ice is an example of this
Sublimation

Water into ice is an example of this
Freezing

Popsicle is an example of this
Melting

Water forming on the outside of the cold drink is an example of this
Condensation

The particles in this have a strong attraction to each other and “vibrate” in place
A solid

The particles in this have less of an attraction than a solid. The particles in a liquid “slide” past each other and take on the shape of the container
A liquid

The particles in this overcome their attraction to each other. They move quickly and take the shape of the container. The particles in a gas move fast, bounce around in the container and will often bump into each other.
A Gas

What freezes at 0°C and becomes a gas at 100°C
Water

What changes from a solid to a gas
Dry ice

Lightning, flames and auroras are example of this
Plasma

Examples of Freezing Water is…
Water freezes when it gets colder that 0°C
Water molecules slow down forming a solid.

Examples of Melting Ice is…
Ice melts when it gets warmer than 0°C
Ice molecules speed up forming a liquid.

Examples of Freezing Water and Melting Ice are…
Freezes and melts at 0°C
Both are forms of water
