Solutions – Chemistry Flashcard

Colloid
A mixture in which the dispersed particles range from 1 to 100nm
dipole
a region in a polar molecule with a partial negative and a partial positive charge
Henry’s Law
The solubility of a gas in a liguid is proportional to the partial pressure of the gas
Immiscible
refers to liquids that do not dissolve in one another and separate into two layers
like dissolve like rule
The principle that solubility is greatest when the polarity of the solute is similar to that of the solvent
mass/mass percent
a solution concentration expresion that relates the mass of solute in grams dissolved in each 100 g of solution
Miscible
refers to liquids that dissolve completely in one another
Molarity
A solution concentration expression that relates the moles of solute dissolved in each liter of solution
Net Dipole
The overall direction of partioal negative charge in a molecule
Non Polar Solvent
A dissoving liquid composed of nonpolar molecules
Polar Solvent
A dissolving liquid composed of polar molecules
Saturated Solution
A solution containing the maxium solute that can dissolve at a given temperture
Solubility
The maximum amount of solute that can dissolve in a solvent at a given temperqature
Solute

The component of a solution that is present in the lesser quantity

Solution

The general term for a solute dissolved in a solvent
Solvent
The component of a solution that is present in the greater quantity
Solvent Cage
a cluster of sovlent molecules surrounding a solute particle in solution
Supersaturated Solution
A solution containing more than the maximum solute that can dissolve at a given temperature
Tyndall Effect
The scattering of a beam of light by colloid particles
Unsaturated Solution
A solution containing less than the maximum solute that can dissolve at a given temperture
