I have chosen to embark on a nursing career, because I have passion to care for people. I have been working for four years in care, as a support worker. I have worked with various organisation. Hospital wards, domiciliary care, residential home and nursing home for elderly. Which has provided me with opportunity to care for others, and looking after their well-being, in a responsible and attentive manner.
I have developed a good relationship with residents. This is enable me to get the best out of the patients, colleagues and public general. This skills and quality really drew me to improve and develop my skills and experience to be a nurse. Requirements for mature students without the necessary formal qualification but with relevant experience are welcome. UCAS Tariff score of 240-280 points. Health promotion, Biology, Psychology. Maths, GCSE grade C or equivalent

Adult nurses are from 18 years or over, however they must be able to provide safe essential care to people of all ages. Their roles is with Adults, young adults, early, middle and later years, and older people in their nineties and beyond. Nurses are in a hospital, in the community and people home. Adult nurse have completed three year degree in nursing. Once qualified they have to registered with national council (NMC)
Adult nurses care for people who are ill, learning to lives with disability, gaining the trust and confidence of each patient is an aspect of nurses’ role. Their roles involves writing patient care plans, values, and beliefs of people from ethnically diverse communities. They adult of all ages with range of health conditions. Improves the quality of patients’ well-being and understand their individual needs.
I found out that adult nursing is a challenging and fulfilling profession. To be a nurse, you need to be ready and happy to work as part of multidisciplinary team that includes doctors, physiotherapists, anaesthetists, pharmacists, and many more. Awareness of patients’ right on medication, right of dose, and right of time. As a nurse you should be able to count because you will be counting the number of pills for your patient. Also you must be to read numbers in terms of volume and weight.
Excellent people skills and competence are important skills because you will be providing care for people of all age and backgrounds. You have understand and respect patients’ believes and cultures. This skills will enabling you to work well with people.
Good communication and observation skill are curial to being a successful nurse. You must be a good listening as well as talking and you have to constantly alert to changes in patients’ conditions. You will dealing with different people from different ethics. Listening is an important and critical to decisions about a patients. Your writing skills must be good, you have to be able to write clearly and effectively because you will be analysing patients care plan.
Caring and Compassionate is about managing and teaching, to improve quality of peoples’ lives. Good care must be delivered and respect choices, values, and dignity
Courage and commitment enables you do the right thing for the people. Courage to be able to stand up and speak about concerns. Embrace new ways of working. Must be ready to be commitment to patients and public. You need to be confident in every area when working with patients as they will trust you with their lives and families and information of patients have to confidential.
My work experience and skills
I recognised that I already have some of the skills and qualities needed to be a nurse. Although there are some areas needs to develop. Such as Skills, quality and academic qualifications. Working with various organization as increased my confidence and developed my ability to work effectively as part of a team.
I shadowed Adult nurses, senior staff and assisted them in minor non-medical ways. Update patients’ records like fluid intake, food intake, update care plans by writing what patient did or had during my shift. Also empower patients to be able to carry out task on their own. Maintaining patients’ independent and observed patients and record any changes of condition. I am very observant and attentive to detail at work. I do take note of every slight change in someone health or mood. I do take and record patients’ blood pressure, temperature and respiration.
I am committed to my job and have full understanding of my role by working within set policy. I do participating in staff meeting, handover, meeting, training, seminars and various discussion groups, where we share experiences and opinions. Always may sure I did any work load that I required to do, to my best knowledge.
However, I focused and pushed myself to achieve the best on my diploma level two and three in health and social care, which I was able achieved at the end. I have been trained by my organization, on how to moving and handling patients safely with equipment, the best ways to understand patients’ needs and deliver good care that is needed.
Communication and observation skills
Communication is the exchange of information from one person to another.
I work at Rehabilitation centre for elderly, as a support worker. I deal with different people and communicate with Nurses, Doctors, Psychotherapy, occupation therapy, and duty offices, managers, patients and their family. I developed my communication skills by listening and speaking to patients and other team members. Working with elderly can be challenging a times.
I have to find the best way to communicate with patients because some of them have speech impairment or difficult to understand long sentence due to memory loss or ear impairment. While working with several of people. I have acquired listening skills which involves a lot of patience. Have been able to avoid a mirror approach with patients who have difficult or challenging behaviours. I always remain calm and address any concerns in professional manner. I do listen and offer necessary help when required. My employment has really improved my communication skills.
I am confident to work on my own. I have done a domiciliary care in the past, where I worked on my own with different patient in their homes. I do recognize my personal limitation and I do seek help when necessary. I always have the courage to try new things.
I have always worked with the full understanding of patients’ confidentiality where all information about patients should kept secret. Staff should not disclosed to anyone who has no right to access such information. I always seek patients consent before carry out any task.
I always respect patients’ privacy by close the door when assisted with personal care and maintains patients’ hygiene and mine. I understand the importance health and safety policy and ensure the safety of the patients are always maintained. I also understand the limitation of my role as a support worker. Safety of the environment are very important to me. As a night support worker, I ensure all the doors and windows were closed at night.
I respect patients’ dignity by covered them with towels before and after bath. I always encouraged and prompt patients’ to do task by themselves in order to regain their independent and confident. I always gives patient choice to choose their cloth and choice on food. I am aware that individuals have right for care, and medication.
I am current thoroughly enjoying the challenge of Access to Nursing. I have learnt that planning and being organized are very important for meeting deadline for assignment. It required a lot of self- study which is very important for my career path. I have developed self- study. I do used my listening skills in the classroom to take note when receiving lectures. Contribute and participating in group discussion. I do respect individual opinions and cultures. Also give people chance to participate in a group activity.
I have to improve on presentation and writing skills. I am a shy person, find it very difficult to look at someone or challenge due to my culture. I cannot stand to do presentation in front of people. Sometimes I find it very difficult to express myself in writing. I also need to improve my vocabulary in order to meet academic writing. I have to practice with other students and friends. I have to create time to read book and watch video on presentation skills which is going to gives me more confident.
I have to improve on listening skills. Sometimes I find it difficult to understand what I have been taught in the class, until I asked a classmate to explain it or read more about it on internet. I think I have to practice good listening skills in a small group or read communication skills textbook.
I have to improve on information technology skills, thus I have basic knowledge but still have to improve on how to use word process, power point and excel.
I need to work on my mathematics skills. Sometimes I miscalculate the figures, which is very bad with the career path I am taking. I have to able to demonstrate of numeracy before I could get admission in to University. I have to checks some website such as (Move on website) for practice and assesse myself. I have create a time table for developed plan.
