In this case study, I would be comparing the two e-tailers i. e. wal-mart. com and target. com. Although both have almost same market offerings but they have their separate markets where they deal. However, the difference between the two is that one has been operating very well with high profits but the other is marginally successful. Wal-mart. com Wal-Mart is an international chain of retail stores that is operating very effectively and it came into existence in 1962 in Arkansas.

It was started off by Sam Walton and his brother Bud. Wal-Mart came up with a brand new slogan which boasted the idea that to live better it’s necessary to save money. And this is what Wal-Mart is all about. Also now the company has renamed its logo and now the new logo is “Walmart” in just one word. Market segment is the division of the total market into different segments according to the needs and the distinctiveness of the target market.

Therefore, Wal-mart. com offers a wide variety of high-quality merchandise, friendly service all with low prices along with the aim to provide a very pleasant shopping experience for the customers on the Internet so that the customers have an utmost satisfaction. Wal-mart. com was founded in January 2000, it is a subsidiary of Wal-Mart Stores, Inc.

and they have their headquarters is the San Francisco Peninsula that is near Silicon Valley where they have access to the world’s deepest pool of Internet executive and technical talent. (Walmart, n. d. ). Wal-Mart is recognized internationally and the main idea of forming Wal-mart was to serve the customers and this could and the goal of Wal-mart. com was to bring the same culture to the Internet. Furthermore, Wal-mart. com is a very efficient system that aims to serve the customers well with lower prices as well as to provide easy access to the customer to more than 1 million products that are available on their website.

Therefore, in they have combined retailing with technology. They provide excellent customer services to their customers along with wide array of products that guarantees customer satisfaction and further helps in customer retention. Target. com Target was opened in 1962 and it is also a competitor of Wal-Mart. However, it has followed a different approach as besides making profits, they have focused more on the social, environmental and economic health of the communities.
