Possible Schizophrenia 1 essay

question

Describe the positive, negative and disorganized symptoms of schizophrenia. Explain what is meant by these terms and how they relate to prognosis and outcome.
answer

Positive symptoms show active manifestations in the sense of delusions and hallucinations. These are the more obvious signs of psychosis. The delusions could be in a sense of grandeur in that you could feed all the world’s children for starvation, or in Capgras or Cotards syndromes. Hallucinations would be seeing or hearing things that are not really there. In Broca’s area, people are actually not hearing voices, but listening to their own thoughts or voices. Negative symptoms show an absence of insufficiency of normal behavior. These symptoms are clustered into avolition, Alogia (absence of speech), Anhedonia, and Affective Flattening (Difficult expressing emotion, not lack of feeling). Disorganized symptoms show erratic behaviors that affect many domains. There is Disorganized speech, inappropriate affect, and Catatonia behavior. Positive symptoms refer to symptoms around distorted reality, Negative symptoms involve deficits in normal behavior in areas of speech, blunted affect, and motivation. Disorganized symptoms include rambling speech, erratic behavior and inappropriate affect. Proper treatment depends on differentiating individuals in terms of their varying symptoms.
