Simple distillation apparatus 250mL round bottomed flask PROCEDURE: Experiment 4 8 mL of cyclohexanol was placed into a 250 mL Erlenmeyer flask, and then a hermometer was Introduced to the cyclohexanol. A mixture of 4 mL of acetic acid and 1 15mL of commercial household bleach was slowly added to the flask, while swirling It. Once the mixture was reached to 30 degrees C, 1 mL of 3M sodium hydroxide was added to the solution.
When the temperature was risen to 45 degrees C, the oxidation process was slowed down by putting the flask into an ice bath to keep the temperature of the mixture at 45 degrees C for 20 minutes. After 20 minutes passed, the mixture was heated by swirling it on the hot plate to complete the oxidation process. A spot test was done by taking some of the reaction mixture onto filter paper, once the mixture tests negative, t was then filtered by suction on an 1 lcm Buchner funnel. The solution was evaporated to 35mL and 5mL of acid was added to the excess.
The solution had sat in order to collect crystals.
The crystals were collected on a small Buchner funnel and set aside to dry on filter paper. RESULTS: Experiment 4 No results were collected due to the 2 crystallizing dishes that broke during the simple distillation. Also, the hot plate that was used was found to be broken. This caused a significant loss in time resulting in the experiment being incomplete. DISCUSSION: Experiment 4 3efore the experiment started, we shouldVe checked our hot plate to make sure the ot plates were working properly.
