Organizational structure encompasses a list of the various Job positions, titles and duties of a business, and the reporting structure or chain of command among them. Formalization Work Specialization: “Work specialization allows a manager to take complex tasks and break them down into smaller more precise tasks that individual workers can complete” Mobiles Perspective: The tasks are broken down at each managerial level in Mobility. The hierarchy of Mobility shows high level of work specialization. Mobility trained their employees so that they best perform one small, specific task. Over time, that employee becomes extremely proficient and effective at performing that task. This allows every employee in the organization to be an expert to some degree.
The advantages of work specialization include: Employees can be an expert to some degree in their specific task Higher levels of productivity Lower quality control costs Job security for employees due to specialized skills Higher profit potential The disadvantages of work specialization include: Limiting the ability to multi-task Isolating and limiting employees Smaller employee skill sets that can exist only when the employee is working Limited cooperation and communication among employees Differentiations: “Differentiations refers to the process of grouping activities into departments”
Once Jobs have been classified through work specialization, they are grouped so those common tasks can be coordinated. Differentiations is the basis on which work or individuals are grouped into manageable units. There are five methods for grouping work activities: 1 . Differentiations by function 2. Differentiations by product 3. Differentiations by geographical regions 4. Differentiations by process 5. Differentiations by customer Mobiles Perspective: Mobility hierarchy shows that every department has their own teams which reveal that they considered teams and their work as an essential part of their organization.
The basis on which they grouped Jobs are function, geography and cross-functional teams. To promote team work Mobility cross-functional teams pick experts from different departments to interact with different people and learn how to manage work activities with different backgrounds. Mobility also take care of individuals and organizes several functions and ceremonies between departments which provide a bridge between employees to interact and communicate with each other. Although,all departments in an organization play a vital role in achieving goals and objectives. Yet the major departments of Mobility are as follow:
Chain of Command: “Chain of command refers to a company’s hierarchy of reporting relationships from the bottom to the top of an organization, who must answer to whom” Mobiles Mobility has cross-functional teams, everyone working as a team mostly to achieve targets properly and also see unity of command in organization. Each department has several line managers who control 11 to 12 teams of 20 to 25 employees ,number of employees depend on the structure of team and line managers has an authority to give direction to these teams for performing specific task. These employees should report to their line managers.
These line managers are controlled by Middle managers of company. The chain of command not only establishes accountability, it lays out a company’s lines of authority and decision-making power. A proper chain of command ensures that every task, Job position and department has one person assuming responsibility for performance. Span of Control: “The number of people reporting to a manager” Mobility has wide span of control. Overall strength of employees in Mobility is 4500 in which top managers are 75, Middle Managers are 750 and Line managers are 3675. Employees are structured in five layers comprising Associates, Specialist,
Managers, Directors and Chief Officers. Employees are grouped into teams and every Line manager can control 20 to 25 teams. Managers with wide spans of control have many subordinates, and it’s not possible for a manager to closely examine activity. Centralization & Decentralization: “Centralized organizational structures rely on one individual to make decisions and provide direction for the company’ Vs. “Decentralized organizations rely on a team environment at different levels in the business. Individuals at each level in the business may have some autonomy to make business decisions”
The organizational structure of Mobility represents well-organized system of control of operations. They have both centralized and decentralized authority depending upon the type of department but mostly decentralization is seen in decision making. Decentralization makes the operations more productive as employees are granted more power and autonomy so they feel delegated with authority. Mobility as a decentralized organization utilize their employees with a variety of expertise and knowledge for running various organization operations. Mobility appreciate new ideas of their employees.
Formalization: “Formalization is the extent to which rules and procedures are followed in an organization; this element varies greatly across organizations” The formalized organizational structure consists of a hierarchical, top-down reporting and decision-making structure. In Mobility the formalization is high to some extent but it depends on departments and requirements. Mobility as a formalized structure includes multiple layers of supervision, including top-level directors or department heads, middle managers and operational supervisors. Mobility structure is easily understood and explained.
Mobility has formal rules and regulations, clearly define goals, security system and consider employee complaints which promote ethical behavior and employees are efficient enough to follow these rules and regulations. Mobility exert no pressure on employees to their Jobs without considering the standards and commitments. There is a formal system of standards which brings harmony within the employees and creates the healthy environment. Mobility has a strong culture which reflects team work, employee motivation and training, innovation and creativity and emphasis on goal attainment.
