What are the characteristics of an Introduction Paragraph?
1. HOOK:
-1-4 sentences
-grabs reader’s attention; question/short quote/statistic/etc.
2. INTRODUCTORY SENTENCES:
-2-4 sentences; introduces topic gradually; can’t move from hook to thesis statement directly, so sentences gradually introduce topic
3. THESIS STATEMENT:
-1 specific statement; clearly introduces paper’s topic + presents main ideas, which’ll be addressed further in the body
What are the characteristics of a Body Paragraph?
1. TOPIC SENTENCE:
-1st sentence of paragraph; tells main idea of paragraph
2. SUPPORT SENTENCES:
-4-6 sentences; clearly expands upon idea presented in topic sentence
-support includes: specific facts, statistics, examples, explanation, etc.
3. CLOSING SENTENCE:
-last sentence of paragraph; summarizes paragraph’s main idea
What are the characteristics of a Conclusion Paragraph?
1. THESIS STATEMENT:
-reminds reader of thesis statement; shouldn’t be exact words of thesis statement in introduction paragraph
2. REVIEW OF POINTS:
-1-3 sentences, reviewing main ideas of the essay (presented in body paragraphs)
3. FINAL THOUGHTS:
-1-3 sentences; should ask reader a question/ask reader to consider an idea
