Interpersonal Communication Self-Concept & Impression Management

Self-concept is the set of perceptions a person has about who he or she is
What we call the “self” is actually a collection of smaller pieces/selves.
You may be female, Asian, athletic, asthmatic, agnostic… but none of those things defines you completely.

Impression management
involves how we want others to see us – the process of monitoring and projecting one’s desired public image
1st goal of Impression Management
Influence others and gain rewards (through ingratiation, intimidation, and self-handicapping)
2nd goal of Impression Management
Expression of personal identity (constructing an image of ourselves to claim personal identity and presenting an image that is consistent with that)
High self-monitors
Act according to demands of the social setting
Are highly attuned to the image that they project
Adapt self-presentation to the situation and context
Low self-monitors
Rely more on core attitudes, beliefs, and values to guide behaviors
Show greater consistency of behaviors
Are less concerned with social context
