Chemistry Unit 6

Hydrogen Bond
The electrical attraction between the slightly positive hydrogen atoms of one molecule and a slightly negative atoms in another molecule.
Covalent Bond
a chemical bond that involves sharing a pair of electrons between atoms in a molecule; Between non metal atoms
Non Polar / Polar Covalent Bond
Polarity of covalent bonds are determined by difference in electronegativity.
1.7-0.4 (polar/unequal sharing)
<0.4 (non polar/equal sharing)
Double Covalent Bond
A double covalent bond consists of two pairs of shared electrons.
Triple Covalent Bond
A triple covalent bond consists of three pairs of shared electrons.
Multiple Covalent Bond
Molecules share more than one pair of electrons in order to achieve full shells of electron.
Asymmetrical Molecule
Polar molecule
Symmetrical Molecule
Non polar molecule
Ionic Bond
A chemical bond in which one atom loses an electron to form a cation and the other atom gains an electron to form an anion.
An atom or molecule or group that has lost or gained one or more electrons.
Lewis Dot Diagram
Show the bonding between atoms of a molecule, and the lone pairs of electrons that may exist in the molecule.
Metallic Bond
A chemical bond in which mobile valence electrons of metal atoms are shared.
The property of something that can be worked or hammered or shaped without breaking.
In Lewis structures, the goal is to make almost all atoms have an octet. This means that they will have access to 8 electrons regularly, even if they do have to share some of them.
Octet Rule
Atoms tend to combine in such a way that they each have eight electrons in their valence shells, giving them the same electronic configuration as a noble gas.
