Bio Ch.3 sections 2 & 3

Question Answer
What are cells? The basic units of life.
What are different types of microscopes? A compound microscope contains two or more lenses.
What are the major points of the cell theory? All organisms are made of cells. All existing cells are cells are produced by other living cells. The cell is the most basic unit of life.
What's a prokaryotic cell? Prokaryotic cells do not have a nucleus or other membrane bound organelles. Instead, the cells DNA is suspended in the cytoplasm. Most prokaryotes are microscopic single- cell organisms.
What's a Eukaryotic cell? Eukaryotic cells have a nucleus and other membrane bound organelles. The nucleus, the largest organelle, encloses the genetic info. Eukaryotes may be multi-cellular or single-celled organisms.
What's a cytoskeleton? A network of proteins that is constantly changing to meet the needs of a cell.
What is one type of fiber that make up cytoskeletons? 1) Micro tubules are long hollow tubes. They give the cell it's shape and acts as tracks for movement of organelles. When cells divide, micro tubules form fibers that pull half of the DNA into each new cell.
What is one type of fiber that make up cytoskeletons? 2) Intermediate filaments, which are somewhat smaller than micro tubules, give a cell it's strength.
What is one type of fiber that make up cytoskeletons? 3) Micro filaments are the smallest of the three. They are tiny threads that enable cells to move and divide. They play an important role in muscle cells, where they help the muscle contract and relax.
What's a nucleus? A store house for most of the genetic info, or DNA, in your cells
What's a vacuole? a space or vesicle within the cytoplasm of a cell, enclosed by a membrane and typically containing fluid.
What's a vesicle? a small structure within a cell, or extracellular, consisting of fluid enclosed by a lipid bilayer
What's a Mitochondria? an organelle found in large numbers in most cells, in which the biochemical processes of respiration and energy production occur. It has a double membrane, the inner layer being folded inward to form layers .
What's a lysosome? an organelle in the cytoplasm of eukaryotic cells containing degradative enzymes enclosed in a membrane.
What's a Centriole? a minute cylindrical organelle near the nucleus in animal cells, occurring in pairs and involved in the development of spindle fibers in cell division.
