Superior
Above another structure (the heart is superior to the stomach)
Inferior
Below another structure (the stomach is inferior to the heart)
Anterior/Ventral
Towards the front (belly) side of the body (The face is on the anterior surface of the body)
Posterior/Dorsal
Towards the back side of the body (The spine/shoulder blades are on the posterior surface of the body)
Lateral
Towards the side of the body (left or right) (your ears are lateral to your face
Medial
Towards the middle of the body (your nose is medial on your face)
Proximal
Closer to the point of attachment (Humerus is proximal to the shoulder)
Distal
Farther from the point of attachment (Wrist is distal to the shoulder)
Deep
Farther from the body surface (The muscle is deep to the skin)
Superficial
Closer to or at the body surface (The skin is superficial to the muscle)
Dorsal Cavity
Cranial Cavity, Spinal Cavity
Ventral Cavity
Thoracic Cavity, Abdominal Cavity, Pelvic Cavity, Abdomino-pelvic
