Cognitive and Social Development

Adolescence is the period of a transitional phase of a child becoming a young adult. An adolescent will change physically, socially, and emotionally during this phase. Adolescence is a process that will affect cognitive and socially towards learning. Cognitive and social development play an important role in the adolescent’s learning. Cognitive development is a critical developmental process that leads into the changes in the future (“Adolescent Cognitive Development”, 2019). Cognitive development affects the learning by creating a link between behavioral to future consequences, and it creates the beginning of imagining an identity and role in the world (“Adolescent Cognitive Development”, 2019). One of the most influential aspects of life for an adolescent is the creation of social skills and how one adolescent can influence another. Adolescents are a phase where being social is of extreme importance and knowing where to belong with will benefit the learning of an adolescent in a positive way by promoting support and confidence. On the other hand, not being social and having difficulties on finding support for an adolescent may affect interfere with the learning experience with anxiety and depression of not finding belongness amongst other adolescents.

Identity Development

Individuality, identity development, and personal behavior affect an adolescent’s learning in different formats. Identity creates one self’s story in life by knowing what desired choices to make for the future (Dolgin, 2010). “Erikson described the task of identity formation as one of

making choices by exploring alternatives and committing to roles” (Dolgin, 2010). As an adolescent builds an identity, it also moves through a choice of values in life, beliefs, goals, and practices; if some of these have no longer a great importance, one can make modifications to redefine its own identity (Dolgin, 2010). Identity is an ongoing process which consists of exploration and discovering in life with the feeling of enthusiasm. Personal behavior also affects the identity, whether an adolescent chooses to engage in a negative or positive behavior it will be reflected on the identity built within. Furthermore, choosing carefully and well-developing an identity will help an adolescent to accomplish goals in life. Learning is a process for individuals and there will be challenges presented, and therefore with a well-developed identity it will enhance the learning development and individuality of an adolescent in the learning environment.

Diverse Strengths, Interests, and Needs

Strengths, interests, and needs of adolescents are part of an appropriate instruction that advances learning. To provide a full-filled instruction lecture in a classroom, a teacher must learn of the strengths, interests, and needs of what the students have. A teacher can develop teaching strategies to target the student’s learning by assessing them. If teachers understand the factors that contribute to the student’s learning and how it affects them, they will be better able to assess their needs and strengths and find innovative ways of helping them learn (Saravia-Shore, n.d.). “Maintaining high standards and demonstrate high expectations for all ethnically, culturally, and linguistically diverse students” (Saravia-Shore, n.d.). In addition, incorporating teaching strategies that include problem-solving activities, open-ended question requiring student to use and form their opinions,

and providing activities where student must use analytic skills, evaluate and making connections will provide an achievable learning outcome (Saravia-Shore, n.d.). In order to provide appropriate instruction to advance learning, a teacher must strategically plan teaching strategies to accommodate students in order to achive a favorable learning outcome. Students learn more when a teacher has high expectations for them, encourage them to identify problems, involve group collaboration activities, and aid in enhancing their learning (Saravia-Shore, n.d.). Finally, the teacher should formulate an idea of what the learning goal is from the students to seemingly provide learning equal opportunities for students with diverse strengths, interests, and needs.

Importance of School, Community, and Family Support

School, community, and family supports are critical to student’s learning and overall well-being of adolescents. Whether it is a teacher, parent, sibling, or a friend, it is of a valuable support to have from for an adolescent who is going through a developmental stage of evolving circumstances in a variety of aspects including: socially, physically, and emotionally. “Schools, parents, and the community should work to together to promote the health, well-being, and learning of all students” (“Why Family and Community Involvement Is Important”, n.d.). These resources of support are critical and promote overall wellness . Research has showed that students whose parents are involved in their education are most likely to attend school, demonstrate growth in their academics, positive behavior, and integrate social skills (“Why Family and Community Involvement Is Important”, n.d.). Additionally, participating in community activities promotes positive academic achievements improves school-related behaviors and reduces misbehaviors and school suspension rates (“Why Family and Community Involvement Is Important”, n.d.). Integrating school, community, family support

will strengthen an adolescent’s learning development by providing the appropriate contribution to the academics. Involvement shown with support will aid the intellectual abilities of an adolescent from the people who are there to assist and promote growth.

Technology in Education

Nowadays technology is being incorporated into education more than ever before. Technology plays in important role in a student’s learning and it helps to reinforce the learning experiences via an electronic device. Technology can be an essential benefit to target every student’s learning with differentiated instruction and supporting learner’s success with explicit instruction and guided practice to become proficient (National Center for Technology Innovation and Center for Implementing Technology in Education, 2010). In addition, a teacher must ensure student are using technology in an appropriate way in the classroom. To ensure this a teacher must have expectations set when using technology, and students should be aware of the consequences in case some of the expectations are violated. Constant monitoring can also help the teacher reduce the inappropriate use of technology. There are tools to help support student success and creativity in a variety of ways whether it is in a collaborative activity or a student-focused activity. Tools such as definitions, translations, math supports, and explanations are easy to access and are available for students to use through an electronic device (National Center for Technology Innovation and Center for Implementing Technology in Education, 2010). The variety of tools that technology provide are of a huge importance. There is also support in different school subjects available just one click away. These supports and resources are easy to learn and most of the tools used in technology provide the teacher

with feedback from the students learning efforts. There are educational websites available for students to use to enhance their learning and is of the teacher’s choice whether to work independently or collaboratively. Technology embraces teaching and learning, and it also encourages the student to engage with their learning.
